Geek Culture and Geek Shirts

 

Geeks, what are they? Geeks or nerds are usually known to be very intelligent, excellent at academic pursuits, video games and have a number of interests which includes playing role-playing games, sci-fi and comic books.

Now what I have typically described is the stereo Think Geeks typical view of a geek, especially from the eighties and nineties. Geeks are generally not considered very cool and the last thing some sections of the population wanted to be associated with is being a geek.

Remember the list of things at the start of this article? That's right about what you usually associate with geeks. Well how many of those things are you actually into?

A lot of so-called geek culture is now main stream. For example look at video games. From their beginnings, Pong, the video game industry has exploded, providing thousands of games suitable for all ages from eight to eighty. Most households these days own a console of some sort. And everyone now plays a video game.

What about the success and importance of the Internet? Everyone these days uses the computer; we are all into computers, even if we think we are not. How many people do you know are on Facebook?

If you need even more evidence of the popularity of geek culture, one of the most popular programmes to come out of America in recent years is The Big Bang Theory. And of course The Big Bang Theory is all about nerds. This program is very successful in main stream America.

Look at the success of geek clothing And I particular, geek shirts. There are so many designs to choose from. The number of retailers and dedicated websites that sell nerd shirts are too many to mention here. The continued success of these shirts, are testament to how main stream geek culture has become.

If you need even more evidence of how successful nerd shirts are, then just think about the number of categories that nerd shirts cover. There are video game shirts, comic book inspired shirts, Sci-Fi Shirts, pop culture shirts, social media shirts, anime shirts. The list could go on and on.

Everyone has one of the stereotypical features of being a nerd. Next time you see someone who is without a doubt a geek, wearing his or her geek shirt, think about how much geeks have given to modern culture.

Next time you look in a mirror, I think you might see a nerd looking back.
